all but用法解析

一般情况下这两个单词组合有两个含义：

1.除了…之外其余（都）

此时all代词，but连词

Her forty-fourth birthday had just passed, unnoticed by all but herself.

她44岁的生日就这样过去了，除了她自己没人注意到。

All but my auntie have had lunch.

除了我的婶婶以外,大家都吃了中饭了。

All but a few will say amen to his proposal.

除了少数几个人外，大家都会十分赞成他的建议。

The plant will stand all but the worst winters out of doors.

除了最严寒的冬季，这种植物都能在户外生长。

All but one of the passengers were killed in the accident.

除了一个乘客外，其他人都在这起事故中丧生。

All but four Democrats voted nay.

除了四名民主党党员外，全部投票否决。

All but he and I are going to the Beijing Zoo.

除了他和我，所有人都要去北京动物园。（研考试题）

注意，all but后接的代词可以是主格也可以是宾格，当all but结构处于主语区域是尤如此。

2.几乎，差不多；

此时all but作副词短语， all but(=almost, nearly)

The concrete wall that used to divide this city has now all but gone

曾经将这座城市分隔开的混凝土墙现在已几乎不复存在。

By 1980, Miami beach had all but totally eroded

到1980年，迈阿密海滩已经完全风蚀了。

He has been all but forgotten.

他几乎已被人遗忘。

But that market has all but disappeared.

不过，这个市场现在几乎消失了。

The room was all but empty.

房间里几乎全空了。

The plan is all but a ravel!

这个计划简直一团糟！

She all but fainted when she heard the news.

听到那消息，她差点晕过去。

The child was all but run over by the train.

那孩子差一点被火车撞到了。

The work is all but done.工作几乎干完了。
